Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen is throwing caution to the wind for Saturday's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

"We will play everybody," Coen stated, confirming that even the team's starters are set for action. This includes rookie phenom Travis Hunter, who was selected second overall in this year's draft and is poised to make history by playing both wide receiver and cornerback.  While the Jaguars have been cautious about overloading Hunter with responsibilities, Coen made it clear his game plan involves reps at both positions.

**Veteran Voices Drive Preseason Push**

Coen revealed that the team's veteran leaders, including quarterback Trevor Lawrence and center Robert Hainsey, were instrumental in pushing for a full-fledged preseason effort. "He was one of the guys that kind of convinced me," Coen said of Hainsey.  "He came in the weight room on his day off, we talked about it — he wanted to play, a lot of the guys want to play."

**Fresh Faces and Familiar Names Take the Field**

This Saturday marks the first chance for fans to witness the Jaguars' new offense and defense under Coen's leadership.  It also offers the highly anticipated debut of last year's Heisman Trophy winner playing on both sides of the ball at the NFL level.

##  Lawrence Lobbies for Hunter to Stay On Offense

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence wants his newest teammate, rookie Travis Hunter, to stick to offense. 

**A Quarterback's Wish List**

"He's so talented, it's hard to keep him off the field," Lawrence said of Hunter on NFL Network.  The quarterback expressed a clear preference: "Selfishly, I definitely want him on offense more." He even playfully presented Hunter with a choice: "Do you want to catch touchdowns or do you want to maybe break up a pass or two?"

Lawrence acknowledged Hunter's versatility and emphasized his desire for the rookie to be on the offensive side of the ball. "He'll make plays wherever he is, but obviously as a quarterback I hope he plays more on offense," Lawrence said.

**Playoff Hopes High in Jacksonville**

Despite a 22-38 record in Lawrence's first 60 starts with the Jaguars, the quarterback remains optimistic about the team's future.  "It's very realistic to expect us to be a playoff team this year," he declared confidently. "You've got to go prove it on Sundays this fall, so it doesn't really matter what I say, but I feel very confident in this team, and I think we're a talented team."

## Scoring Shift: Damage Over All in Proposed MMA Rule Change 

Andy Foster, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission and a prominent figure in MMA regulation, is pushing for a significant scoring overhaul that would prioritize damage inflicted over other factors. If approved this week at the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports' (ABC) annual conference, the proposed update to the Unified Rules of MMA could create a clearer path for judges to award 10-8 and even 10-7 rounds.

**A Focus on Impact**

"To get a 10-8 in mixed martial arts is now going to require significant damage," Foster told Uncrowned's "The Ariel Helwani Show." He views the change as bringing MMA scoring closer to boxing's established system.  Currently, a knockdown often triggers a 10-8 round in boxing, but not always in MMA.

Foster emphasizes that the new language, if adopted by ABC, will solidify how judges interpret dominant rounds. While 10-8s already account for "damage, domination and duration," damage takes precedence under this proposed system. 

"Damage is the No. 1 scoring criteria through effective striking and effective grappling," Foster said. “You've heard these other terms — effective aggressiveness, effective cage control — [but] the only thing that matters is how the techniques, through striking or grappling, impacted the opponent.”  


**Seeking Consistency and Clarity**

The change aims to bring consistency to judges, commentators, and fans alike. The recent featherweight bout between Mohammad Yahya and Steven Nguyen at UFC Abu Dhabi sparked widespread debate. Six knockdowns occurred in the opening round, but all three judges awarded Nguyen a 10-8. Foster believes “It should have been a 10-7 [even] under the current criteria."

He also expressed concern about the fight’s intensity: "I would have hoped that fight would have been stopped after the fifth knockdown," he said. “I'd have had no issues [if it were stopped] after the fourth. For goodness' sakes, he had to have had some assistance back to the corner. There were a lot of places it could have been stopped.”

Despite the criticism, Foster defended referee Jason Herzog, stating that they discussed the match afterward. "He's one of the best referees in the world," Foster said. 

**Knocking Down Debates: Limit Rule and More**

The Yahya-Nguyen fight ignited a discussion about whether MMA should adopt a set knockdown limit, similar to boxing’s “three-knockdown rule.” Foster opposes this approach. 

“I'm definitely in disagreement with that,” he said. “The first three knockdowns were not what I’d call significant.” He also cited different cornering cultures between MMA and boxing, suggesting the latter tends to withdraw fighters more frequently.


**Pushing for Clarity: 10-10 Rounds and Beyond**

Foster emphasizes his desire to minimize 10-10 rounds, believing they hinder scoring consistency. “If you’re watching a fight for five minutes, and you can’t tell me who won that fight, I’ll find another judge,” he warned.

While adding a fourth or fifth judge has been proposed, Foster highlights logistical challenges. He advocates caution against rapid rule changes, pointing out last year's implemented rules, including clarifications on grounded fighters and the legalization of 12-6 elbows, should have been adopted sooner.  

**Looking Ahead: GFL Fallout and Fighter Pensions**

Foster commented on the failed Global Fight League (GFL), which collapsed financially before its inaugural event in California. He prioritized fighter payment security before allowing any new promotion into his jurisdiction. "I'm not going to go into a fight and not be sure the fighters can be paid," he stated.


He also highlighted a unique initiative: boosting California’s fighter retirement fund through the state DMV. 

"When we talk about what we want for MMA, I’d like to see more high-level people doing the teaching — whether that’s judges, refs, or corners,” Foster said. “Everyone has a part to play.”

**Porthcawl, Wales** - Miyu Yamashita of Japan achieved a momentous victory Sunday, claiming her maiden major title at the AIG Women's Open. With an unyielding performance throughout the final round, she secured a two-shot victory, finishing with a 2-under 70.  

Yamashita's dominance was marked by resilience and precision. She avoided bogeys until the outcome was firmly in her grasp, including crucial par putts on the back nine that neutralized Charley Hull's surging challenge. Notably, she sunk a pivotal par putt on the final hole as Hull had narrowed the gap to one shot.

Hull, who began the final round three shots behind Yamashita, mounted a valiant comeback.  She birdied the 14th with a remarkable 20-foot putt, closing the gap to just one stroke. However, misfortune struck on the 16th when she landed in a pot bunker off the tee, forcing her to settle for a bogey. Another bogey on the 17th ultimately prevented Hull from securing the title, leaving her tied for second with Minami Katsu of Japan after a final round 69.

This victory marks yet another triumph for Japanese golfers on the world stage. They have now won four of the last nine women's major championships, with Mao Saigo claiming the Chevron Championship earlier this year.

Gutierrez is officially in his first NFL season out of Minot State.  He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Broncos in 2022 and has also spent time with the Patriots, Raiders, Chiefs, Browns, 49ers, and Colts. Last season, Gutierrez was on the practice squad for the 49ers, Browns, and Colts. 

Gutierrez has appeared in two career games – one for the Raiders in 2022 and one for the 49ers last season. He has played three offensive snaps and seven on special teams.

Collins played seven seasons in Dallas after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2015. ## Mets Skip Starting Pitcher at Deadline, Betting on Bullpen & Young Arms

The dust has settled after the Mets' whirlwind trade deadline, leaving one burning question: why no starting pitcher? 

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns addressed this during a post-deadline Zoom call, stating his team explored options in the starting pitching market.  "There's multiple ways to build a pitching staff," he said, expressing confidence in both the current major league arms and the developing talent within their minor league system. 

Stearns explained that not every rumored pitcher ultimately moved, leaving them satisfied with their acquired bullpen reinforcements. "We’re really happy with the arms we were able to acquire, who are going to pitch out of our pen," he stated.  He also highlighted his faith in existing starters and acknowledged the progress of young pitchers in Triple-A. "If needed, they could be part of the mix going forward.”

Promising prospects Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat emerged as potential call-up candidates. Stearns lauded their development: “Both guys have taken very nice steps forward in their development...They are doing a good job."  He added that the team needs to assess when the right opportunity arises for their promotion.


**Minor League Standouts Show Promise**

McLean, 24, has been dominant for Syracuse this season with a 3.01 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 14 games (11 starts). His recent outing on July 30 saw him pitch six innings while allowing two runs and striking out six batters. Sproat, also 24, boasts a 4.30 ERA and 1.29 WHIP and hadn't surrendered a run for over a month before his July 25 start. He followed this with five scoreless innings on Thursday.

Despite their impressive performances, the Mets' current rotation remains healthy, with David Peterson, Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, and Clay Holmes all pitching effectively. Paul Blackburn also resides in the minors, adding another layer to the starting pitching puzzle.

The win-now Mets may prioritize experience over youth for the remainder of the season, unless an injury necessitates a change.


While the "opportunity" Stearns spoke about remains unclear, it's evident that the Mets believe in Sproat and McLean's potential. The question now becomes: will they be given the chance to shine on the major league stage?

The NFL kicked off a new era Thursday night, replacing the traditional chain system with Sony's Hawk-Eye technology to measure first downs during the Hall of Fame Game between the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers.  Fans got their first glimpse of this futuristic approach as officials utilized the high-tech system for the first time in a live game.

The NFL announced its decision to adopt Hawk-Eye back in April, citing efficiency as the primary reason for the change.  "Sony’s Hawk-Eye virtual measurement technology will serve as an efficient alternative to the process of walking chains onto the field and manually measuring whether 10 yards have been met after the official has spotted the ball," stated the league. While a traditional chain crew will remain on the sidelines in a secondary capacity, referee Shawn Smith confirmed that no physical chains were used during the Hall of Fame Game.

**Will Cameras Improve Accuracy?**

While Hawk-Eye utilizes six 8K cameras to precisely determine the ball's position, the technology’s impact on accuracy remains to be seen.  The effectiveness of first down calls often hinges on the officials' ability to accurately spot the ball, not necessarily the length of the chain. The chains themselves have historically provided a reliable representation of the ten-yard distance.

**Faster Decisions: A Game Changer?**

Ultimately, the virtual measurements are designed to expedite the process, allowing for near-instantaneous decisions compared to the time required to manually deploy and adjust the chains. Whether fans will notice this increased efficiency remains to be determined as the regular season commences on September 4th.

The Denver Broncos made two roster announcements Thursday afternoon. The team has signed linebacker Garrett Nelson while placing linebacker Johnny Walker on injured reserve. 

Nelson brings experience to the Broncos after spending time with the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals following his undrafted status out of Nebraska in 2023.  He recorded five tackles and a sack during the Dolphins' preseason but did not see action in any regular season games. Prior to joining the NFL, Nelson played for the San Antonio Brahmas in the UFL over the past two seasons, accumulating 15 tackles in eight games during the 2025 campaign.

Walker, who joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent this offseason after playing college football at Missouri, is now sidelined due to injury.
