Among them was 22-year-old Tyler Morton, whose limited involvement painted a picture of a player at a crossroads.

Substituted after just half an hour before being reintroduced later, Morton’s brief appearances felt symbolic. Slot, fresh from guiding Liverpool to their first Premier League title since 2020, has a clear vision for the future, and Morton might not be part of it.

"I'm looking for game time, simple as that really," he said. “I think last season was tough for game time for myself, so it was a big learning year.
