Liverpool Star Sends Clear Transfer Message to Arne Slot After AC Milan Defeat

Morton Signals Transfer Intentions After AC Milan Defeat

Liverpool's pre-season friendly loss to AC Milan might not be a result new manager Arne Slot wants to carry into the new season, but it did reveal some intriguing clues about the squad's future. Among them was 22-year-old Tyler Morton, whose limited involvement painted a picture of a player at a crossroads.

Morton's Message: "I'm Ready to Play"

Substituted after just half an hour before being reintroduced later, Morton’s brief appearances felt symbolic. Slot, fresh from guiding Liverpool to their first Premier League title since 2020, has a clear vision for the future, and Morton might not be part of it.

Speaking to The Redmen TV post-match, Morton was candid about his situation. "I'm looking for game time, simple as that really," he said. “I think last season was tough for game time for myself, so it was a big learning year. I learnt a lot from players, the manager and stuff but now I’m ready, I’m ready to play."

This readiness stems from more than just frustration. Morton has spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, racking up 46 and 41 appearances respectively. However, last season back at Liverpool yielded only five appearances in all competitions.

Despite being part of a title-winning squad, he admits the personal satisfaction wasn't complete. “I’m a massive Liverpool fan so I loved celebrating with my family, my friends, I couldn’t have asked for a better year except for game time really!” he added. “It was brilliant and I’m just happy for the whole of Liverpool, everyone who comes to every game to watch that team, we were brilliant last season so hopefully we can kick on and do even better this season.”

A Path Blocked at Anfield?

Under Slot, Liverpool have revamped their midfield, with established names and rising talents making it difficult for Morton to secure regular playing time. Even in pre-season, his early withdrawal raised eyebrows and hinted that the club may be open to letting him leave.

There has been talk of interest from West Ham United, who are believed to be closely monitoring the situation. With Morton’s technical skillset, balance in possession, and eye for a pass, he could thrive in a system built around his strengths.

Time For a Fresh Start?

Morton's club career so far reflects the challenge faced by many academy graduates at elite clubs: breaking through is one thing, staying relevant is another. His numbers — 46 games for Blackburn in 2022/23, 41 for Hull in 2023/24 — point to a player with proven durability and growing maturity.

Yet, with only five appearances last season and stiff competition under Slot, Morton’s desire to play regularly may only be fulfilled by leaving Anfield. He wouldn't be the first Liverpool academy product to carve out a successful career elsewhere. If West Ham or another Premier League side take the plunge, the move could prove mutually beneficial. Morton needs minutes, and he’s made it clear he’s no longer content to wait.
