## Verlander Eyes Another Season at 42

Justin Verlander isn't ready to hang up his cleats just yet. Even with a subpar record this season, the 42-year-old veteran is hinting at a return in 2026. 

"I mean, I’d like to," Verlander said before Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals. "At this point in my career, if something goes really wrong, I’m not going to rehab a surgery or anything. I always understand that it could be it, but I think physically, I've shown some good health this season."

Verlander entered the MLB record books on Sunday, becoming the 10th pitcher in history to reach 3,500 strikeouts. Despite the milestone and recent improvements to his ERA (down to 4.53 from a peak of 4.99 in July), he took the loss after giving up five runs on 11 hits over five innings.

While his current season may not be his best, Verlander insists things are trending upwards. "As I’ve been on the mound, things have started to get better and better," he explained. "To me, that’s a good sign with all the work I put in after my nerve injury last year, which notoriously takes a long time. The ball’s rolling in the right direction, and I would like to continue pitching."

The future Hall of Famer has already achieved legendary status: three Cy Young Awards, nine All-Star selections, two World Series titles, two ERA crowns, an ALCS MVP, a Rookie of the Year award, and a Triple Crown. He's compiled a 263-155 career record with a 3.33 ERA entering Sunday.

After stints with the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros (twice), and New York Mets, Verlander signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco Giants this season. He'll be free agency eligible at age 43 next year.

## Skubal's Outburst: "Every Inning Matters" 

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal’s first-inning argument with home plate umpire Tom Hanahan during Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels has sparked conversation. Now, Skubal is explaining what set him off.

**The Pitch That Started It All**

On Monday's episode of the "Foul Territory" podcast, Skubal addressed the heated exchange, calling out a particularly frustrating call in the top of the first inning.

“The pitch prior was a strike, and he ‘balled’ it," said Skubal. “The sequence of events is probably what led to that outburst. It wasn't just the one pitch, because I understand, everyone's human.”

Facing Angels designated hitter Mike Trout with two outs and a 3-0 count, Skubal felt the call put his team in a difficult position.  A Statcast analysis confirms that a pitch before the controversial one was clearly within the strike zone.

“It’s one of the best hitters of all time in the box. I don't want to be in a 3-0 count to him,” Skubal added. “I think every inning matters, every pitch matters, and that’s probably what I was most frustrated with.”


Despite his frustration, Skubal ultimately induced Trout into a lineout to third baseman Zach McKinstry, ending the inning. The Tigers went on to win the game 6-5.

**Sign-Stealing Controversy**

Skubal also weighed in on sign-stealing tactics, expressing discomfort with certain practices. While he acknowledged runners on second relaying information and players in the dugout attempting to decipher tipped pitches, Skubal took issue with base coaches leaving their boxes to gain an advantage.

"The one I have a problem with is the first base coach and the third base coach that aren't in the box that they have. I don't know why they have a box if they can't just be in it," he said. 


Skubal specifically called out Sandy Alomar Jr., the Cleveland Guardians' base coach, for his tactics.

**Facing Legends: Bonds and Ruth**

In the podcast, Skubal entertained hypothetical matchups against legendary hitters Barry Bonds and Babe Ruth. While admitting he wouldn’t mind facing Bonds, Skubal said it would be more about honoring the "greatest hitter of all time."  He also shared a conversation with Tigers' legend Alan Trammel, who believes even Babe Ruth could adapt to modern baseball. 

"I love that answer. And that's probably the same thing with Babe Ruth. ... once he gets up to date with modern baseball, I think he's going to be a game’s great," Skubal said.

##  A Splitter-Heavy Approach: The Detroit Tigers Unlocking Kyle Finnegan 

**Detroit Acquired the Reliver at the Trade Deadline and Immediately Made a Pitch Mix Adjustment.**

Kyle Finnegan joined the Detroit Tigers at the July trade deadline. The right-handed reliever, known for his ground ball inducing pitches, quickly found himself with a revamped approach thanks to the Tigers' analytical staff. Since joining Detroit, he’s thrown 4⅓ scoreless innings with six strikeouts in four games, converting all three save opportunities.

The secret?  More splitters, fewer fastballs. 

"It's adapt or die in this game," said Finnegan, who turns 34 in early September. "I'm always constantly looking for ways to get better. I guess they identified some things. Maybe that's why they brought me over here. I'm embracing it, and I'm trusting it. There are a lot of really good minds over here."

**The Numbers Tell the Tale**


Finnegan’s numbers speak for themselves.  With the Nationals, he had a 4.38 ERA and a 21.7% whiff rate, below the MLB average of 26.2% for relievers. For the Tigers (entering Tuesday's game in Chicago), he has yet to allow a run and carries a 23.3% whiff rate - an improvement, but still shy of the MLB average.

**A Shift in Philosophy**


The biggest difference between Finnegan in Washington and Detroit? His pitch mix.  With the Nationals, he threw 65.7% four-seam fastballs, 29.6% splitters and 4.7% sliders. With the Tigers, he's at 48.1% four-seam fastballs, 42.3% splitters and 9.6% sliders.


Before joining the Tigers, Finnegan always believed his fastball was his best pitch. "The four-seamer was one of my better pitches, so I wanted to throw my better pitch more often," he said, explaining his pitch mix with the Nationals. "I kept falling back to the bread and butter — the fastball."


But the Tigers believe the splitter is Finnegan's best weapon. 

"It's really good," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said of Finnegan's splitter. "We're getting to know him, and he's getting to know us, and we're trying to bring out the best version of him because he only pitches when the game is on the line."


**Building Confidence Through Success**

Catcher Dillon Dingler explained why Finnegan is throwing more splitters. "We're going to lean on his best pitch," Dingler said.  "He still has a really good fastball. He can go at the bottom with it and at the top — generate whiffs at the top and steal strikes at the bottom. It’s going to be hard to be on the heater because it’s 97 (mph) and then also cover a good downward-movement splitter."

The new approach appears to be working. More splitters have led to more swinging strikes, while fewer fastballs have produced more called strikes. His strikeout rate has jumped from 19.6% with the Nationals to 42.9% with the Tigers, albeit in a small sample size. 

“Lean on their best stuff,” Dingler said. "With Finney, we're going to go splitter, we're going to go heater, and we're going to go occasional sliders to righties."


**Harris Saw Potential in Finnegan**



Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris hinted at this plan after acquiring Finnegan from the Nationals on July 31. "I think there's going to be some more swing and miss in there," Harris said.  "I think there are some things that he can do a little bit differently that will help him miss a few more bats, both with the four-seamer and the splitter."

So far, the results have been promising. 


"He wants to use some good stuff," Hinch said. "He's got multiple pitches to use. He shouldn’t fall into the trap of having to do it any one way.”

The San Diego Padres are proving their trade deadline moves were the right call. Since the flurry of acquisitions, they boast a 5-3 record and have already seen some impressive returns. On Saturday night, that trend continued in dramatic fashion.


**Walk-Off Hero: An Unintentional Strategy**

In the bottom of the 10th inning, with two runners on and one out after Ryan O'Hearn was intentionally walked, Ramon Laureano stepped up to the plate. He delivered a grounder that sailed over the Boston Red Sox third baseman, sending Xander Bogaerts home for a thrilling 5-4 victory.

But the walk-off hero's story doesn't end there.  Laureano admitted to reporters after the game he didn't know the signs and was aiming for something different entirely.

The Padres made several notable acquisitions at the deadline, including Mason Miller, JP Sears, Nestor Cortes, Ryan O'Hearn, Freddy Fermin, and Laureano.  But Laureano has quickly become a valuable asset. 

In just eight games with the Padres, he boasts 10 hits, eight RBIs, four runs scored, and a home run. He's played every game since his arrival, solidifying his place in the lineup.


Laureano's MLB journey has been anything but linear, starting with the Oakland Athletics, followed by stints with the Cleveland Guardians, Atlanta Braves, and Baltimore Orioles before landing in San Diego.  

Despite the stops along the way, at 31 years old, Laureano seems to have found a new home and is making a significant impact on the Padres' success.

## D-Backs Trio Nearing Return from Injury

Three Diamondbacks will begin their rehab assignments with Triple-A Reno on August 12th, manager Torey Lovullo announced. Catcher Gabriel Moreno, first baseman Pavin Smith, and infielder Ildemaro Vargas are all expected to join the team in a staggered return following the road trip to Texas and Colorado.

"I wouldn't say everybody on one day, but we could sprinkle it in there around the same time," Lovullo said.


All three have been actively participating in various game settings at Salt River Fields and complex games recently. Moreno has been sidelined since June 14th with a fractured right index finger, Smith since July 5th with an oblique strain, and Vargas since June 24th with a broken bone in his right foot.


##  Pfaadt Looks to Continue Strong Pitching Against Rockies

The Diamondbacks face the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field on Friday afternoon. RHP Brandon Pfaadt (11-7, 5.02) takes the mound for Arizona against Colorado's RHP Tanner Gordon (2-4, 6.59).  Pfaadt bounced back from a rough outing in Detroit with a solid performance against the Padres last time out, allowing just two runs over 5⅔ innings.

He will be looking to improve on his lone start against the Rockies this season, where he gave up four runs in five innings at Coors Field on June 22nd. Pfaadt has also found success with his cutter since adding it to his repertoire on June 17th, holding opponents to a .146 batting average against the pitch.  


Gordon, meanwhile, has struggled in his last two outings, allowing 13 earned runs over just 5⅔ innings. He was roughed up by the Diamondbacks at Chase Field last season, failing to escape the first inning and giving up four runs (three earned) while recording only two outs.

The New York Yankees are facing a dilemma: how to accommodate both Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the lineup once Judge returns from his elbow injury. While fans eagerly await Judge’s comeback, the prospect raises questions about where Stanton will fit after spending the season exclusively as the designated hitter.

Stanton hasn't played the outfield since 2023 due to a history of lower-body and soft tissue injuries, making a return to right field unlikely. This leaves manager Aaron Boone with a tough call: stick with Stanton as DH or risk jeopardizing his health by pushing him back into the outfield.

“I don’t even know what to say anymore,” former Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain wrote after Monday's 8-5 loss, expressing his apprehension about Boone’s decision. “Everyone holding on ok, just checking on y’all.”  


**Turf Concerns Add Fuel to the Fire**

Adding another layer of complexity, Stanton will sit against the Rangers Tuesday and Wednesday because the Yankees are concerned about him playing on Globe Life Park's turf given his injury history. 

Despite this, Stanton has been a bright spot for the team, batting .270 with 10 homers, 28 RBIs, and a .875 OPS since returning from the IL in late June. He has already recorded 1.0 bWAR after posting a cumulative 0.7 bWAR from 2022-24.


**Stanton Open to Returning to the Field**

When asked about the possibility of returning to right field, Stanton expressed confidence in his ability. "I'm (throwing) on target,” he told Yankees reporter Randy Miller. “I have good timing. It’s a line drive (throw). That’s all that matters. I have to get back out there seeing it, but I should be all right.”


This leaves Boone with a difficult choice: prioritize Stanton's health and keep him at DH, or risk further injury by pushing him back into the outfield. The Yankees faithful will undoubtedly be watching closely as this storyline unfolds.

**Texas Takes Control in Extra Innings**

Down to their last two outs in the ninth, the Rangers called on Joc Pederson to pinch hit against Yankees closer Devin Williams. Pederson delivered a clutch solo home run, tying the game at 5-5.  An inning later, Josh Jung launched a three-run homer off Jake Bird, giving Texas an 8-5 victory.

**A Troubling Trend Emerges**

FanGraphs reports that the Yankees have now blown more saves than any other team in the league over the last 14 days. This comes as they fall to 60-53, trailing the Toronto Blue Jays by 5.5 games in the American League standings.

## Torres Back in the Lineup After Briefly Sidelined by Forearm Issue

Gleyber Torres returned to the Tigers' starting lineup Wednesday after a brief absence due to a left forearm injury. The second baseman missed Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins but was back in action, batting second and playing his usual position at Comerica Park.

"I told him to do some work before the game," manager A.J. Hinch said before Wednesday’s contest. "If anything comes up, I can slot Andy (Ibáñez) in there and get him another day. But he assured me that everything was fine, and he thought he would be good to go."

Torres' absence stemmed from tightness in his left forearm, an issue he had been dealing with for a couple of days. 

"He didn't really love the way that he could swing," Hinch explained after Tuesday’s game. "And so he thought one at-bat off the bench, if we needed it, was better. Once he said that, I took him out of the lineup and pretty much made him unavailable."

While Torres did not need to be scratched from Wednesday's game, he is still experiencing some soreness.

“He’s got some general soreness," Hinch noted before the game. “If you see him scratched, that means he’s more sore than usual. But right now, the information I have is he’s good to go.”

The 28-year-old is hitting .273 with 13 home runs, 55 walks and 59 strikeouts in 101 games this season, posting a .796 OPS. He has hit four home runs in his past eight games.


**Vierling's Struggles Continue**

The Tigers’ loss to the Twins on Tuesday was marred by defensive mistakes, particularly from center fielder Matt Vierling.  He misplayed fly balls for doubles in both the first and fifth innings, leading to extra bases for the Twins. 

"We'll look at his jump," Hinch said after Tuesday's game. "The routes look funky, which means his first read wasn't the correct read, but I like that he went after it on his first read."

Despite these errors, Hinch still trusts Vierling. “You can’t redo it,” he stated before Wednesday's game. “I thought they were tough plays, but they’re plays that everybody could say that can be made. He’s the first one to tell you that. It’s not a matter of whether he can play center, it’s just completing the play."

Vierling is hitting .220 with seven walks and 23 strikeouts in 28 games this season, posting a .705 OPS.  The 28-year-old outfielder is still searching for his first home run in 2025 after hitting a career-high 16 homers in 144 games in 2024.

A long drive couldn't deter Atlanta Braves rookie Hurston Waldrep from making history. The 23-year-old right-hander earned his first major league win Sunday in the unusual setting of Bristol Motor Speedway during the MLB Speedway Classic.

Waldrep's journey to the mound began with a five-hour road trip from Triple-A Gwinnett, Georgia, arriving just before game time after being called up the previous night. 

“Wake up at 4:45, got in the car a little after 5, drove here with my girlfriend. Got here 9:45 or so. Everything since then, it’s been nonstop,” Waldrep said, describing his whirlwind day. “Didn’t really have time to sit here and think about how it all happened. Nonetheless, grateful for it, happy to be here. It’s been an unbelievable day.”


The drive from Gwinnett County to Bristol is a staggering 250 miles – over 450 laps around the famed track itself.  Waldrep tried to catch some sleep during the journey but found it difficult.

“It was really breathtaking to walk out, see how they set everything up, see the field, and just hearing from the players how last night went,” he said of his arrival at the unique venue. “It was all around just awesome.”


**A Strong Debut on a Special Stage** 
Sunday's game marked Waldrep's first appearance in the majors this season.  He delivered a solid performance, allowing just one run and three hits across 5 2/3 innings. This followed his big league debut in 2024 where he started two games for the Braves.


"After I took him out, I was like, 'Everything we put you through today you’ve done your job,'" manager Brian Snitker said. "He’s made a lot of strides. I think his time in Triple-A has been really really good for him."

Less than 24 hours after the MLB trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals will be without one of their stars as they begin a crucial three-game set against the San Diego Padres. The Cardinals are expected to place Nolan Arenado on the 10-day injured list (shoulder) prior to Friday's game, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.

"The #STLCards are placing Nolan Arenado (shoulder) on the IL prior to today’s game against San Diego. It’s the same nagging injury that caused him to miss games in early July," tweeted Woo. "More here, plus additional roster moves: [link]"


Arenado has been battling a right shoulder issue since early July. He sat out several games last month, hoping to rest his shoulder and avoid a stint on the injured list. While the 34-year-old gold glove third baseman continues to excel defensively, he struggled at the plate in July, slashing .175/.230/.211 with two extra-base hits and two RBIs.

A career .282 hitter, Arenado is hitting a mere .235 this season, with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs. His last home run came on June 21 against the Cincinnati Reds.  This would mark only his third trip to the injured list during his 13-year career, the last coming in 2023.

In a corresponding move, Nolan Gorman (back) is coming off the 10-day injured list and is expected to see a majority of the starts at third base. The 27-year old began a rehab assignment on Tuesday and has gone 3-for-13 with a double and home run during his three games with Double-A Springfield.

On the season, Gorman is slashing .219/.310/.408 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs in 66 games. After an impressive June in which he hit .256 with six home runs and 16 RBIs, Gorman cooled off last month, hitting .214 with two home runs in nine games.

The Cardinals currently sit five and a half games behind the Padres for the third and final NL Wild Card spot.
