## Commanders Land Veteran Tackle Niang Following Herbig's Retirement

**Washington bolsters offensive line depth with familiar face.**


The Washington Commanders have wasted no time finding a replacement for veteran guard Nate Herbig, who announced his retirement just yesterday. The team announced Wednesday the signing of 26-year-old offensive tackle Lucas Niang.  

"We have signed T Lucas Niang," the Commanders tweeted, accompanied by a photo of Niang in uniform.

Niang, a 6-foot-6, 315-pound lineman, was a third-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2020 NFL draft after playing collegiately at TCU.  Over his five seasons with the Chiefs, Niang appeared in 33 games, making nine starts. He spent most of the 2024 season on the practice squad before being released in November.

The signing is intriguing as Niang joins a crowded tackle room that already includes Laremy Tunsil, Josh Conerly Jr., Trent Scott and Andrew Wylie.  Tunsil, Conerly and Wylie are considered locks for the 53-man roster, with Scott also having an excellent chance.

Niang's familiarity with Washington's offensive line coach, however, could be a factor. He was teammates with both Wylie and Nick Allegretti in Kansas City during their two Super Bowl championship runs.


With Herbig's departure, the battle for starting guard positions between Chris Paul, Julian Good-Jones and Michael Deiter intensifies. The question now becomes: how many offensive linemen will Washington ultimately keep when they trim the roster to 53 players next month?

**Packers Coach Sees Potential in Former Wide Receiver**


Green Bay Packers wide receiver Bo Melton has taken an unconventional path in his NFL career. Entering his fourth season, he’s made a bold switch from wide receiver to cornerback. While a position change this late in a career isn't ideal, coaches see potential in Melton's athleticism and willingness to learn. 

“He's done a nice job,” said Head Coach Matt LaFleur. “When you watch him through the course of drills, the skill set is there—it's just getting an adequate number of reps to go and get comfortable out there at a very difficult position to play. I'm really pleased with not only how he's approached it, but how he's gone out there and executed."

Melton has impressed coaches with his natural instincts and quick feet during practice sessions with the second-team defense.  He credits his brother, who plays cornerback for the Arizona Cardinals, as a source of inspiration. 

Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley noticed Melton’s transition immediately during offseason drills. "He's super athletic, and then you saw him do some (defensive back) drills, and as he backpedaled, you saw how quick his feet were and how he could transition," Hafley said Wednesday.


**Learning Curve Ahead for Melton**

While enthusiastic about Melton’s potential at cornerback, Hafley acknowledges the steep learning curve ahead. “This isn't going to be like we put him in and it's, 'Oh, he's got it.' No, it's a hard position to play,” said Hafley. "People might think you're just out there—go cover a guy—but it's one of the hardest positions physically to play, and there's thinking to it, too. It's not as easy as some people think."

Melton remains focused on absorbing everything coaches teach him. “I'm blessed to be here, blessed to be in this position, so I'm just going to attack everything," he said. 

**Special Teams Role Remains an Option**

The Packers are optimistic about Melton’s future, regardless of his ultimate position. Special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia values Melton's contributions on special teams, where he played a significant role last season.


"No matter what you ask him to do, we think he's going to become an elite special teams player," Bisaccia said. "He was big for us a year ago. He's really just the ultimate team player right now, doing anything he's asked to do."

Bisaccia points out that Melton’s experience on kick and punt coverage has already provided him with valuable tackling skills. 


**Preseason Pressure Mounts**

Melton faces an uphill battle to secure a roster spot at cornerback. The Packers have several experienced players ahead of him, making the competition fierce. 

With the NFL cutdown day looming on August 27th, Melton has three preseason games to prove he can be a valuable asset in the defensive backfield. While there will inevitably be growing pains as he adjusts to this new role, his commitment and willingness to learn have already made an impression on coaches.


"I believe in him, and I'm excited to see where this can go, but at the same time, I think everybody's got to kind of slow down. Everything's not going to look perfect, but I was fired up," Hafley said. "I love the guy. You win with guys like Bo."


"We're excited that we have him, regardless of what side of the ball he's on. He's going to be an impact on our team," Bisaccia added.

CLEVELAND — The fate of star pitcher Shane Bieber hangs in the balance as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.  Rumors swirl that the Guardians might be willing to part ways with their ace, who is currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

Bieber, when healthy, possesses the potential to be a dominant force on the mound. However, his return to major league action remains at least a week or two away, posing a challenge for interested teams who would be evaluating him solely through rehab assignments.

The Guardians find themselves in a precarious position.  They recently navigated a tumultuous stretch marked by a 10-game losing streak followed by an impressive 11-2 surge that propelled them back into playoff contention. However, the recent gambling investigation involving All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase, who is sidelined through at least August 31st, significantly impacts their pursuit of a Wild Card berth.

While the Guardians are known for valuing their assets and standing firm on trade offers, they have historically been open to exploring various options.

**Contract Complications Add Another Layer**

Bieber signed a one-year deal with Cleveland this past offseason worth $10 million, including a player option for 2026 valued at $16 million with an opt-out clause of $4 million. This adds complexity to any potential trade, as acquiring teams would be responsible for roughly $3.2 million for the remainder of the season plus another $4 million for his opt-out, totaling a significant $7.2 million for two months of Bieber coming off Tommy John surgery. It presents a high-risk, high-reward scenario.

**Potential Trading Partners Emerge**

While trade negotiations remain fluid, several teams have emerged as potential suitors for Bieber's services. 


* **Los Angeles Dodgers:**  Boasting both a powerhouse major league roster and one of baseball’s top farm systems, the Dodgers possess ample resources to pursue a deal for Bieber. Top prospect Dalton Rushing, considered a standout catcher, could be a key piece in any trade package.
* **Chicago Cubs:** The Cubs are eager to close the gap with the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central and see Bieber as a potential solution. They hold several top prospects, primarily on the offensive side, who could entice the Guardians.

Louisville football took to the field Wednesday for their first day of fall camp, but scorching temperatures forced head coach Jeff Brohm to make an unexpected adjustment. 

Originally scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. start, practice was moved up to 9:45 a.m. due to a heat wave gripping the city, with the heat index soaring into triple digits. While the earlier time provided some relief from the peak afternoon heat, Brohm described conditions as "good and humid and hot."

"That's always important, to be out there for a while, to learn how to control your body and keep it hydrated and not cramp up and not have to miss practice and learn how to do those things," Brohm emphasized.  "Until you're out there, and until you’re out there for a long period of time, you don't really get a test at that."

Moving forward, most preseason practices will be held in the morning hours. However, once classes begin on August 18th, the team will shift to afternoon workouts and full pads, raising additional concerns about the impact of heat on players.

**The Growing Threat of Heat Waves**

Louisville's experience highlights a pressing issue exacerbated by climate change: increasing frequency and severity of heat waves.  Industrial activity, fossil fuel burning, and deforestation contribute to this environmental phenomenon. 

The city’s Office of Advanced Planning and Sustainability, in a 2020 report, identified heat waves as one of the most significant health risks facing Louisville residents. The number of days exceeding 90 degrees has nearly doubled since the period from 1961-1990, with projections suggesting between 50 and 100 days above 100 degrees annually by midcentury.

**A History of Heat-Related Concerns in Football**

Tragic incidents underscore the dangers of extreme heat in football.  In recent years, Kentucky has witnessed several fatalities and serious illnesses linked to exertional heat illness during practices. In 2006, 16-year-old Ryan Owens suffered a heat stroke during practice, while Max Gilpin, a 15-year-old sophomore, died after collapsing during a 94-degree practice in 2008.  Further emphasizing the issue, University of the Cumberlands wrestler Grant Brace died in 2020 following a grueling "punishment practice" with restricted access to water.

**Prioritizing Player Safety**

Brohm emphasizes player safety as paramount, stressing that health remains a top priority throughout the season. He acknowledges the challenges posed by heat and aims to strike a balance between pushing players and ensuring their well-being.


“I think getting out in the heat is important,” Brohm stated. "... When you put the pads on, it gets a little hot, a little different. And we just want to make sure that we're smart, but yet we're still pushing the envelope on that.”

Chelsea have secured the signature of Ajax defender Jorrel Hato in a deal worth an initial £37 million. The agreement is subject to approval from Ajax's supervisory board. 

The 19-year-old Dutch international is set to sign a seven-year contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2032. He has already received medical clearance and is expected to travel to west London shortly.  

Chelsea view Hato as a promising young talent who will add valuable competition to their defensive ranks. The versatile defender is capable of playing both left-back and in central defense.

Hato's rise through the ranks was meteoric. He made his senior debut for Ajax in February 2023 at just 16 years and 335 days old, making him the third-youngest player to ever feature in an Eredivisie game for the club. Since then, he has accumulated 75 appearances for Ajax and represented the Netherlands national team.

Ajax's decision to sell Hato stems from a need to raise funds after a two-year absence from the lucrative Champions League. The Dutch giants will return to Europe's top competition this season.

**Nairobi, Kenya:** Morocco's local national football team kicked off their preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a focused training session at Kasarani International Sports Complex annex in Nairobi. 

Under the guidance of head coach Tarik Sektioui, the squad is determined to represent Morocco at its best on the continental stage.  "We're here with high motivation and strong focus," stated a team official. "The goal is clear: bring the CHAN title back home."

## Dusty Baker Returns to the Dugout for Nicaragua's 2026 World Baseball Classic Run

**Hall of Famer Embraces New Challenge, Citing Clemente and Garvey as Inspiration**

COOPERSTOWN, NY — After a two-year retirement from Major League Baseball, legendary manager Dusty Baker is stepping back into the dugout. He'll lead Nicaragua in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, he told USA TODAY Sports.  

"I'm excited," said Baker, who boasts a distinguished career as both a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner during his 19 years as a player and a seasoned manager for 26 seasons. "When they asked me, I thought about Roberto Clemente going there to help the country. I thought about Marcus Garvey. I know baseball is trying to get going in Nicaragua, and I want to help."

Baker had previously been approached to manage the U.S. team in 2023 but chose to remain with the Houston Astros after their World Series victory in 2022. Now retired from MLB managing –  serving as a special advisor for the San Francisco Giants – he believes this is the perfect opportunity.

“I considered managing in the WBC back then, but I just couldn’t leave my team," Baker explained. “I didn’t think it was right to leave my team for two weeks in spring training. I was trying to win two World Series in a row.
"So, now, the timing works great."


**A Team Built on Experience and Legacy**

Baker's appointment came after being contacted in December by Nicaragua general manager George Santiago and former manager Marvin Bernard. He sought counsel from his wife, Melissa, and son, Darren, who plays in the Washington Nationals organization, before accepting the position.

"It should be cool," said Baker, the only manager in MLB history to lead five different franchises to division titles. "I know it will be a great life experience. I hope I can add to theirs, and they can add to mine.
“I’ve never been a part of the WBC, but everyone seems to enjoy it. I will as well. But let’s make it clear. I’m here to win."

The 76-year-old Baker is slated for a formal introduction at a press conference in Nicaragua this August. He plans to assemble a staff featuring former coaches Gary Pettis, Jacque Jones and Dan Firova, alongside Bernard as bench coach and Randall Simon. Bernard, who becomes the sixth Nicaraguan-born player to reach the Major Leagues and the second position player, brings invaluable experience to the team.

**A New Chapter While Leaving MLB in the Rearview**


Despite this exciting new venture, Baker has no plans to return to managing a major league team.  With 2,183 wins, placing him seventh all-time, he is eligible for the Hall of Fame’s contemporary era ballot in December 2026, with an induction ceremony scheduled for July 2027.

“I miss the camaraderie and the game," Baker admitted, "but I don’t miss the verbal dodgeball twice a day. I don’t miss the travel and bickering between old school and new school and sabermetrics against experience.
“Besides, I don’t have to train for a long-distance race managing in the WBC. This will be a sprint. I can handle that. Now, I just have to brush up on my Spanish."

Michigan fullback Max Bredeson has high praise for the Wolverines' new running back combination: Jordan Marshall and Justice Haynes. He calls them "unbelievable," but fans are still waiting to see their full potential on the field.

Marshall, despite injuries hindering his freshman year, stepped up admirably. He even surpassed 100 yards against Haynes' former Alabama team. Haynes, a five-star recruit, previously played as a change-of-pace back behind Jalen Milroe and established running backs Jase McClellan and Jam Miller at Alabama.  However, after transferring to Ann Arbor, he is expected to see a significantly larger role.


**Thunder and Lightning or Mirror Images?**

Michigan traditionally utilizes a "thunder and lightning" approach with its running backs, but how does this new duo compare? 

Bredeson offers insight into their contrasting personalities: "Very similar and very different at the same time," he describes. "Jordan's a little more outgoing, and Justice will kind of come in and be a little outgoing. They're like good friends. Two different energies, like different types of guys."

Surprisingly, Bredeson notes that their playing styles are remarkably alike: "If you were to line them up both, they look like the same running back," he says. Both possess explosive speed and a willingness to run between the tackles. 

This similarity could pose a challenge for opposing defenses, as the constant rotation of these bruising yet swift tailbacks will keep them fresh throughout the game. Bredeson explains: "Both can hit the home run, and both are plenty willing to get downhill. If I were to compare them, I'd say they're pretty similar. But two running backs that can wear you down over time. Once one gets worn down, here comes the next one."


**The Wait is Almost Over**

Fans got a brief glimpse of Marshall against Alabama and Haynes in the spring game. However, the full unveiling awaits on August 30th when Michigan opens its 2025 season against New Mexico.
