WOLFSBURG, Germany — U.S. winger Kevin Paredes will be sidelined for the foreseeable future after undergoing successful foot surgery on Monday. The 22-year-old, born in Virginia, is no stranger to injury setbacks, having missed nearly all of last season due to a previous foot problem.

Wolfsburg confirmed the operation but did not disclose whether this latest procedure was related to his prior injury.  Despite showing promise as both a Wolfsburg and U.S. national team player after his debut in 2023, Paredes has been hampered by recurring injuries. He managed just two Bundesliga appearances last season following months sidelined by his initial foot problem.

## Premier League Honors Jota and Brother in Moment of Silence

**Clubs to wear armbands, display tributes this weekend.** 

LONDON — The Premier League will hold a moment of silence across all matches this weekend to honor Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain in July.  

The league has been in consultation with Liverpool to determine the most respectful way to commemorate the brothers. In addition to the silence before kickoff at each match, players from all clubs will wear black armbands. Clubs have also been provided messaging and imagery to display on big screens throughout the weekend. 

This follows tributes paid to Jota and Silva before Sunday's Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium. Wreaths were laid on the pitch and a period of silence was observed before the match began.  A small number of Palace fans disrupted the moment of silence, prompting condemnation from other supporters who called for respect.

## America's Cup Gets a Major Overhaul: Smaller Crews, More Inclusivity, and Battery Power

**New rules shake up historic sailing competition for 2027 regatta.**


WELLINGTON — The America’s Cup just got a major makeover. Announced Tuesday, the new rules for the 38th edition of the prestigious regatta in Naples, Italy in July 2027 have been called a “seismic moment” and the “boldest change in 174 years of the Cup.”

Gone are the days of large crews; teams will now be limited to five members, including at least one woman. Each team must also include at least two nationals, with one being female, reflecting the country of origin.  Adding a new twist, each boat will also carry a sixth "guest" crew member - anyone from a celebrity or influencer to a media representative or sponsor.

**Sustainability and Efficiency Take Center Stage**

In a bid to modernize the event, most functions on the 76-foot America’s Cup boats will now be powered by batteries rather than human effort. The regatta itself will also occur every two years instead of three, fostering more frequent competition.

A new governance system has been established, giving all competing teams equal responsibility for organizing both on-water and off-water aspects of the event, as well as control over media and commercial rights.  


**"This is a seismic moment," says Athena Racing Team Principal.**


The changes have been met with largely positive responses from competitors and key stakeholders.

“As the founding Trustee of the America’s Cup, we are completely supportive of the move to modernize the oldest sporting trophy in the world,” said Jay Cross, commodore of the New York Yacht Club, the first team to win the America's Cup back in 1851.

Team New Zealand, a dominant force in recent regattas, echoed these sentiments. "Although the America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport and the pinnacle of sailing, its Achilles heel has always been its lack of continuity," said Team New Zealand chief executive Grant Dalton.  "This transformation now gives all teams collective stewardship.” 

To keep costs under control, a cap of €75 million ($87 million) has been imposed on each team competing in 2027. Returning teams will have to retain their existing hulls while new contenders can either acquire an AC75 hull or build one to the same specifications.


Athena Racing team principal Ben Ainslie, whose team is the Challenger of Record, emphasized the collaborative spirit behind the changes. "The partnership agreement fundamentally reshapes the governance and organization of the event,” Ainslie said. “The teams and yacht clubs share a vision to make the America’s Cup more inclusive, compelling and financially sustainable."

These significant alterations come after a period of contention during the protocol development process, with some challengers criticizing Team New Zealand's management of the event.

Gainesville, Fla. — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is putting in the work to recover from a strained left calf, but his return to full participation remains uncertain.

Coach Billy Napier confirmed Monday that Lagway is "on schedule" with his rehab and throwing 70 passes daily, but will remain “modified for a while” during practice. The sophomore quarterback, who went 6-1 in seven starts last season, sat out Saturday's scrimmage and hasn't yet joined 11-on-11 drills. 

The 15th-ranked Gators open the season August 30 against Long Island University.

“His workload is high," Napier said. "It’s just not with a pass rush, you know? We’re controlling the environment, trying to take care of him from a soft-tissue standpoint.”

Lagway's injury, sustained while running with teammates a week before training camp began, adds another chapter to a season already marked by setbacks for the Heisman Trophy hopeful. He missed spring practice due to a shoulder injury following sports hernia surgery and battled shoulder soreness last fall, culminating in a strained left hamstring in November.

“Any football player would be better off taking the reps,” Napier said. “The key is to be creative in terms of how we format practice, format the walkthrough. We’ve got to maximize all the mental reps, the process reps, the communication reps.”

He continued, “It’s not ideal. That’s the way I’ve tried put it in the past, and I still kind of stand by that. In a perfect world, he’d be 100% and taking every single rep. But he’s not able to do that.”

**Young Talent Steals the Spotlight**

While Lagway recovers, three quarterbacks are vying for the backup position. Freshman Tramell Jones Jr.'s impressive performance has elevated him in the competition, pushing returner Aidan Warner and college journeyman Harrison Bailey. 

"He’s got arm talent, and I think he’s a smart kid," Napier said of Jones' ability.  “But he’s still got to operate much quicker, got to process quicker, communicate better under the gun and the play clock, his ability to manage the problems as they arise.”

Napier called Jones' performance “buzz worthy.”


Lagway completed 60% of his passes for 1,915 yards, with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024. He took over the starting role after Graham Mertz tore a knee ligament at Tennessee in October.

**OBERHOFEN, Switzerland** — Two Olympic gold medalists and three members of Norway’s dominant ski jumping team face ethics violations from the International Ski Federation (FIS) following an investigation into alleged tampering with ski suits. 

Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, two star ski jumpers, along with two coaches and a member of the service staff were charged under FIS competition rules. The charges stem from “equipment manipulation” allegations that first surfaced during the world championships in Norway last March, sending shockwaves through the tight-knit ski jumping community. 

**Illegally modified suits could provide athletes with an unfair advantage, enabling them to fly further.**

The FIS conducted a rigorous investigation involving 38 witness interviews and examination of 88 pieces of evidence. The ethics committee will now rule on the charges, which could result in bans or fines.  No other individuals are facing charges in the case.

The FIS has already implemented stricter regulations on ski jump suits following the scandal. These changes led to a wave of disqualifications at the first competition of the new season this past Saturday. However, the FIS attributes these issues to technical problems and insists that there is no suspicion of “ill intent.”

**Phoenix, Arizona** – Alyssa Thomas etched her name in WNBA history Thursday night, becoming the first player ever to record three consecutive triple-doubles. Atlanta trailed 34-28 at halftime but roared back in the third quarter, scoring the first 10 points to take their first lead of the game. The Dream then outscored Chicago 32-18 in the third, establishing a comfortable 60-52 advantage heading into the final frame.

Jordin Canada extended Atlanta's lead to double digits at 74-63 with 5:47 remaining in the fourth quarter. Teammate Te-Hina Paopao contributed 12 points off the bench, and Nia Coffey added 10. LOS ANGELES — Dearica Hamby poured in 21 points and Rickea Jackson added 20 as the Los Angeles Sparks demolished the Connecticut Sun 102-91 on Thursday night. The win marked their eighth victory in nine games, pushing their record to 14-15.  

The Sparks’ offense was a symphony of scoring with six players finishing with double digits. Cameron Brink erupted for all 11 of her points in the second half, while Azura Stevens and Julie Allemand chipped in with 10 each.  Allemand, in a historic performance, secured her first career triple-double with a layup in the fourth quarter. She finished with 10 rebounds and 11 assists to go along with her 10 points.

Connecticut (5-24) battled valiantly, led by Tina Charles and Marina Mabrey who each scored 19 points. Bria Hartley added 16 points while Leila Lacan contributed 10 points and seven assists. The Sun’s hot shooting from beyond the arc in the first half—7 of 14 three-pointers—helped them build a 51-49 lead going into halftime.

The Sparks, however, turned up the heat in the second half, led by Kelsey Plum who finally found her rhythm with a 3-pointer at the 2:41 mark of the third quarter, giving Los Angeles a 69-64 advantage.  Plum continued her offensive onslaught, sinking the Sparks’ 10th three-pointer with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter, fueled by Julie Allemand’s 10th assist. This extended their lead to 89-78.

Los Angeles finished the game shooting 11 of 25 from beyond the arc and a perfect 21 of 26 from the free-throw line.

The New York Mets fortified their lineup ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline, acquiring center fielder Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for three minor league pitchers. 

This marks the second trade between the two teams in a week. Last Friday, the Mets secured left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from Baltimore for a pair of minor leaguers.

Mullins, who boasts impressive speed and defensive prowess, brings much-needed offensive firepower to the Mets' outfield, where Tyrone Taylor had excelled defensively but struggled at the plate. Versatile veteran Jeff McNeil has also seen time in center field due to his batting ability, but he primarily plays second base and corner outfield positions.

The 30-year-old Mullins, an All-Star in 2021, is eligible for free agency this fall. While his overall stats this season stand at .229 with 15 home runs, 49 RBIs, 14 stolen bases, and a .738 OPS across 91 games, he's shown a surge in performance recently. Mullins batted .290 with three homers, seven doubles, and an impressive .868 OPS in July alone.

The Orioles received right-handers Raimon Gómez, Anthony Nunez, and Chandler Marsh in the deal.


In another flurry of activity leading up to the trade deadline, the Mets significantly bolstered their bullpen earlier this week. They acquired All-Star reliever Ryan Helsley from St. Louis and right-hander Tyler Rogers from San Francisco in separate deals that cost them six players. 

Both Helsley and Rogers are also eligible for free agency after this season.


The Mets, currently leading the NL East by a half-game over their rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies, have made it clear they're committed to contending for the pennant.
