Experts question Morocco’s 2026 budget forecasts amid global uncertainty and domestic pressures
Doubts Rise Over Morocco's Ambitious 2026 Budget Targets
Experts Warn of Global Instability and Domestic Challenges
Economists and financial analysts in Morocco are raising concerns about the government’s macroeconomic projections for 2026. They argue that persistent global instability and unresolved domestic issues could significantly hinder the achievement of key targets outlined in the finance bill's preliminary guidance note, issued last week by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch to ministers and government officials.
"The current global economic climate is fraught with uncertainty," said one leading economist, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and geopolitical tensions create a challenging backdrop for any ambitious budget plan."
Analysts also point to unresolved domestic challenges, such as high unemployment rates, particularly among youth, and persistent inequalities, which they say could undermine the government's fiscal targets.
The guidance note projects significant economic growth in the coming years, but experts remain skeptical. "These projections appear overly optimistic given the current realities," stated another financial analyst. "Achieving these ambitious goals will require a combination of effective policy implementation, strong global economic performance, and unforeseen circumstances remaining favorable."
