Louisville football wrapped up its final open practice Friday. The focus shifted from acclimation to intensity as the Cards prepared for their season opener against Eastern Kentucky on August 30th at L&N Stadium. With Jamarice Wilder sidelined due to an unspecified injury, the running back rotation saw Isaac Brown, Duke Watson, Keyjuan Brown, Braxton Jennings, and Shaun Boykins, who converted from wide receiver this fall.  Brown's versatility shone as he caught a deep pass from Deuce Adams that would have been a touchdown in a game. 

**Offensive Line Shows Promise**

The offensive line boasts a strong first unit with Makylan Pounders, Lance Robinson, Pete Nygra, Rasheed Miller, and Mahamane Moussa vying for positions. Vic Cutler also saw first-team reps during camp. TJ Capers is making strides at linebacker, demonstrating his potential as an integral part of the rotation.

**Tight End Competition Heats Up**

While Nate Kurisky was absent, the tight ends were heavily featured in Friday's practice. Davon Mitchell, a large target, impressed with two catches, including a one-handed grab. Jaleel Skinner and Hamilton Atkins both saw time with the first team during 7-on-7 drills.

**Defense Shows Strength**

Antonio Watts dominated the defensive backfield with an interception and nearly another later in the drill.  D’Angelo Hutchinson also intercepted a pass from Miller Moss, signaling his expected larger role this season. He credits former Cardinals cornerback Jarvis Brownlee, now with the Tennessee Titans, for his development. 

Injuries Cast Shadows Over Practice

TJ McWilliams appeared to injure himself but walked off the field under his own power. On Thursday, wide receiver Chris Bell seemed winded and took some time to recover. Linebacker Cameron White's situation appeared more serious as he limped off the field after a fall, requiring attention from trainers. 

**Communication Key for Cardinals Success**


Defensive coordinator Ron English praised players like Hutchinson and freshman linebacker Caleb Matelau for their vocal leadership on the field. The emphasis on communication highlights the team's progress in addressing a previous weakness.

## Stepping into Loveland's Shadow

Marlin Klein is stepping onto a stage set by Colston Loveland, the former Michigan tight end who was drafted tenth overall by the Chicago Bears in 2025. Now, Klein is tasked with carrying the mantle of success at a program known as "Tight End U."  

Klein’s path to this point has been unique. He only began playing football a few years before arriving at Ann Arbor, and Loveland's injury struggles throughout 2024 gave him valuable experience in preparation for his current role. While he might have been green, Klein never doubted his ability. Tight ends coach Steve Casula pushed him to be the best, challenging him in a way Klein describes as entering “the jungle.”

“Yeah, I always thought that I belonged,” Klein said. "I knew it was going to take me a little longer than some others...  So I knew there was going to be a lot of challenges for me, but that's what I put myself in, because I wanted to be the best." 

Casula's grueling training regimen wasn’t about tearing Klein down; it was about building him up to meet the Michigan standard.

"It was really the most critical time of my life," Klein said. "It was never good enough, but that was really just because he tried to push me to my best… And he helped me to the standard. Which is the Michigan standard, and the Michigan standard is a championship standard."


Klein seized opportunities in 2024 when Loveland was sidelined, embodying the “stay ready so you don’t have to get ready” mentality. With that experience and Casula’s intense training behind him, Klein feels prepared to take on the No. 1 tight end role.

"I think it prepared me," he said. "Everything can be stripped away from you the same day... So I knew I was going to be prepared… Like I knew I was going to be ready when the time came."

## Gamecocks Face Brutal Road Schedule in 2025

South Carolina football will have four true road games in the 2025 season, facing a gauntlet of challenging environments. The Gamecocks kick off their campaign with a neutral-site matchup against Virginia Tech in Atlanta on August 31st before returning home for two weeks. After that, they'll hit the road for the Mayor’s Cup clash against Missouri on September 20th.

Coach Shane Beamer boasts a respectable 4-1 record on the road in 2024, with the lone loss coming by a narrow margin to Alabama.  He holds an overall road record of 8-11 through his four years with the program.

**4. Missouri:** 
While this game at Faurot Field holds historical significance for Beamer, who is finally looking to break his losing streak in Columbia (0-2), the Tigers won't be easy targets.  Last year’s thrilling Gamecocks victory, capped off by Rocket Sanders’ late touchdown, will undoubtedly fuel Missouri’s fire for revenge. However, compared to other road trips, the environment at Faurot Field might not be as intimidating. Kickoff time is yet to be determined and could fall between 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. ET or 6-8 p.m. ET.

**3. Ole Miss:**
Facing Ole Miss late in the season, potentially after a string of wins, presents a different challenge compared to last year's home matchup on October 5th, where South Carolina suffered a crushing 27-3 defeat right after an open date.  The Gamecocks’ knowledge of their previous performance could prove valuable, giving them an edge despite playing in the notoriously hostile Vaught Hemingway Stadium. Kickoff time is also yet to be announced and will likely fall within the same windows as the Missouri game. This marks Beamer's first trip to Oxford, but South Carolina holds a 4-5 all-time road record against Ole Miss.

**2. Texas A&M:**
South Carolina has never tasted victory at Kyle Field. Their 0-2 record under Beamer and an overall 0-5 mark in College Station speak volumes about the daunting task ahead. The Aggies, still smarting from their 44-20 loss to the Gamecocks in 2024, will be eager for revenge in front of their passionate fans. Fortunately for South Carolina, the game is scheduled for an early kick-off sometime between noon and 1 p.m. ET on November 15th, potentially easing some pressure compared to a night game.

**1. LSU:**
Playing at Tiger Stadium is always a nightmare for visiting teams.  South Carolina's history at LSU is dismal, with a 1-13 record all-time, making this Beamer’s baptism by fire in the notoriously hostile environment. The combination of an undefeated LSU team, potentially hungry for revenge after last year's nail-biting loss to South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium, and the electric atmosphere in Baton Rouge makes this a near-impossible challenge. **PISCATAWAY –** Replacing a star like Kyle Monangai won't be easy for Rutgers football. Monangai, who rose from an underrecruited prospect to one of the program's most prolific rushers, is now making waves in training camp with the Chicago Bears after being drafted in the seventh round.  

But while the Scarlet Knights look to fill the void left by Monangai, coach Greg Schiano sees a bright spot: running back continues to be a powerhouse position for Rutgers. 

“I think we have a really good running back room,” Schiano said. “So it’s really going to be a matter of who wins the competition. It’s not always decided by the opening game.”


**A Deep Running Back Pool**
Rutgers returns a talented group, led by Antwan Raymond and Ja’shon Benjamin, both of whom impressed last season – Raymond as a true freshman.  Raymond finished with 457 rushing yards on 100 carries with eight touchdowns, while Benjamin had 19 carries for 100 yards with one score.

Edd Guerrier and Sam Brown are also returning, the latter looking to build on his previous success when healthy. The Scarlet Knights further bolstered their backfield by adding Florida Atlantic transfer CJ Campbell Jr., a dynamic veteran who's adept at catching passes as well. Last season, Campbell rushed for 844 yards and 11 touchdowns while also hauling in 40 catches for 466 yards and one TD. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Campbell brings valuable experience to the team after playing three seasons at Florida State before transferring to FAU.

“I’ve played a lot of football,” Campbell said. “Just knowing how to be a professional, going about things the right way and not get emotional about certain things whenever you get coached a certain way. Just leaning on the younger guys and talking to the younger guys about how to go about certain things.” 

Campbell's arrival has injected even more competition into the running back room. Despite his experience, Campbell is still battling for carries alongside Raymond, Benjamin, Guerrier, and Brown. Schiano emphasized that all the running backs will get equal opportunities to prove themselves during training camp.


**Antwan Raymond Embraces the Challenge**
Raymond is entering his second year with Rutgers after a unique path of reclassifying and joining the program early, skipping his senior year of high school. The experience gained in 2024 was invaluable for Raymond, who described reclassifying as “one of the best decisions I decided to make.”

“Totally different,” Raymond said about this training camp compared to last year. “I’ve grown a lot, I’ve matured a lot. I know the system more. I think I’m getting a lot better. It’s definitely night and day different. Just the way I prepare, I’m more adapted to the schedule, I’m more adapted to the scheme and the system. I think it’s definitely different.”


 **A Team Effort**
With weeks remaining until Rutgers' season opener against Ohio on August 28th, the competition for the starting running back position remains fierce.  But one thing is clear: this deep and talented group of running backs will ensure there's no drop-off in production from one player to the next. The Scarlet Knights may have to replace a star like Monangai, but they have the weapons to do it.


“I don’t look at myself as better than them, they don’t look at themselves as better than me,” Campbell said. “We’re all human beings, we’re all here to play ball and we all love each other,” Campbell said. “We all lean on each other and talk to each other.”
