Morocco shows relative progress in HIV fight, but prevention faces funding risks

Morocco Leads the Way Against HIV in MENA Region

Despite a Surge in New Infections Across the Middle East and North Africa, Morocco Makes Strides.

While many countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) struggle to combat the spread of HIV, Morocco stands as a beacon of success. New HIV infections have skyrocketed by approximately 116% across the MENA region between 2010 and 2023.

However, Morocco has bucked this trend, demonstrating significant progress in its fight against the virus. Despite this positive trajectory, challenges remain.

Funding Concerns Threaten Prevention Efforts

Although Morocco has made strides in combating HIV, concerns have been raised about the potential impact of reduced funding on prevention programs. Approximately 14% of people living with HIV in Morocco are unaware of their status, highlighting the need for continued investment in testing and awareness campaigns.
