Model taxi contracts stir debate over rising rental fees in Morocco
Morocco's Taxi Drivers Fight Back Against Soaring Rental Fees
New contracts between taxi license holders and operators have sparked outrage across Morocco’s transport sector. At the heart of the controversy: monthly rental fees that some drivers say are unaffordable.
Rental Costs Skyrocket
The contracts stipulate monthly rentals ranging from 4,000 to 7,000 dirhams. While supporters argue this formalizes agreements and brings stability to the industry, many drivers view it as a drastic increase burdening them with unsustainable costs.
“These fees are simply too high,” says one driver, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to make a living.”
Others argue that formalizing contracts could benefit the industry in the long run by establishing clear guidelines and protecting both drivers and operators.
