Rockford Sports Complex Grand Opening Delayed to August

Local Events Rescheduled Due to Weather Impact

The much-anticipated grand opening of the Clarence Hicks Sports Complex has been pushed back due to recent weather conditions that hampered construction efforts. The event, originally planned for an earlier date, is now set for August 30th.

Phase One Unveiling Features Field and Track

Organizers anticipate unveiling Phase 1 improvements at the complex, marking a significant milestone for the Rockford Park District. These upgrades include:

  • An artificial turf field with stadium seating
  • An eight-lane running track
  • A dedicated throw and jump event area
  • Spectator seating for 1,000 people
  • A parking lot equipped with solar lights and landscaping enhancements

A unique feature will see the use of turf donated by the Chicago Bears from their Walter Payton Center at Halas Hall to create a warm-up area. The total cost for Phase 1 improvements is $7,564,313.53.

Complex to Host Diverse Youth Programs

The Clarence Hicks Sports Complex will serve as home to a range of Rockford Park District Youth Sports Programs, including:

  • NFL Flag Football
  • NFL Cheer
  • Rockford F.I.R.E. Track & Field
  • Youth Sports Outreach
  • Rockford Wolves Youth Football
  • Chicago Bears Outreach Camp
  • AAU Northern Cross Country National Championship
  • AAU Cross Country District Qualifier

Beyond these programs, the 77-acre park has already seen upgrades such as new scoreboards, fencing, bleachers, a turf playground surface, an asphalt path, and a large shade structure.
