The Los Angeles Lakers can now fully focus their efforts on building a championship contender around Luka Doncic after he agreed to a three-year contract extension. This offseason, they've made significant moves by addressing their center position with the signing of Deandre Ayton and adding 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart.

Despite these additions, some experts believe the Lakers still lack the necessary pieces for a true championship run. However, Doncic's recent statement to management reveals a burning desire to win, possibly creating a sense of urgency within the organization.


In May, Doncic met with general manager Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick at a restaurant, where he made his intentions crystal clear.

## Rookie Running Back DJ Giddens Thriving in Colts Training Camp

**Cooter Impressed by Giddens' Adaptability and Versatility**

Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter is high on rookie running back DJ Giddens after nearly two weeks of training camp. 

"DJ's done a really nice job," Cooter said following Saturday's practice. "He's a young guy, who's been put in some different roles maybe than he was in college. Just in the NFL, you're running the ball, but maybe you're running it from different sides and behind the quarterback. You're running these routes that maybe you never ran in college. You're working different blitz pickup schemes."

Cooter praised Giddens' ability to quickly grasp the nuances of the NFL game, noting how most young running backs struggle with the expanded responsibilities compared to college. 


"Oftentimes a young running back has a lot on his plate learning that. It is different than college, but DJ's done a really nice job of picking up the offense, picking up his role and then going out and executing it."

**Kansas State Star Brings Explosive Talent to Indianapolis**

Giddens arrives in Indianapolis after two standout seasons at Kansas State.  In 2024, he averaged a remarkable 6.5 yards per rush, ranking sixth in average yards after contact and 20th in missed tackles forced, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).

After the NFL Draft, General Manager Chris Ballard highlighted Giddens' exceptional contact balance, making him incredibly difficult to bring down and leading to numerous explosive runs.  Giddens finished last season ranked 15th in rushes of 10-plus yards among all running backs.


**Adding a Receiving Dimension to the Backfield**

Giddens also brings a valuable pass-catching element to the Colts' backfield, something that was lacking in 2024. He was targeted 72 times over his final two seasons at Kansas State and averaged nearly 13.0 yards per catch in 2024.  


While Giddens possesses the potential to contribute in passing situations, he also needs to prove himself in pass protection, a skill that often presents a learning curve for rookie running backs.

**The Backup Role is Up for Grabs**

While Jonathan Taylor is expected to carry the primary workload at running back, the backup role behind him remains open. Giddens is competing with Khalil Herbert and Tyler Goodson for those snaps.

"Oftentimes, he has had a knack in this camp of sort of finding that crease, reading that defense the right way, and working with his offensive line to create yards," Cooter added. "So we're real encouraged with DJ. I'm excited to watch him continue to try different roles, and different routes, and different run schemes within this offense to see what he's comfortable with and where he goes from here."

The New York Giants drafted wide receiver Jalin Hyatt in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, hoping he'd bring explosive speed and "take the top off" defenses. Two years later, that promise remains unfulfilled. Hyatt has struggled to find his footing, failing to consistently earn the trust of coaches and quarterbacks. 

But this year could be different. With three new quarterbacks on the roster all eager to work with the former Tennessee standout, a fresh start may be just what Hyatt needs.

"For myself, disappointing," Hyatt admitted when reflecting on his challenging 2024 season. "I felt like I could have done better. I had opportunities. I felt like I didn't make the most of them. It's a new year, a new opportunity. I just can't wait to go out there and ball with the guys."

Hyatt’s renewed energy is evident, fueled in part by the guidance of quarterback Russell Wilson. 

"A true pro, a true leader," Hyatt said of Wilson. "He always calls me, texts me, if he sees something that he liked or didn't like, and he's so good at communicating with our receivers, with our tight ends, with our running backs. I think you can just see it in that room; everybody’s confidence is higher. It’s going to be a fun year."

One challenge Hyatt faced was his size. His initially slender frame struggled against the physicality of NFL defenders. The Giants are hoping he'll find success playing in the slot, where contact is more frequent. To prepare for this role, Hyatt has focused on bulking up.

"I played around 171-172 pounds last year and played outside mostly," Hyatt explained. "Didn’t really have a lot of slot reps. For myself, I just felt like I need to get stronger, more physical. It helped me with contested catches, helped me with blocking. Not only that, with press technique, especially going against bigger corners in the league. So that's one of the biggest emphases for myself."

Despite his offseason dedication and Wilson’s support, Hyatt won’t be handed a starting spot. He must earn it through consistent performance. Battling leg cramps and other minor ailments have limited his reps during camp, but he's adjusting to his new physique and aiming for continued improvement. 

"I'm around 189, 190," Hyatt revealed. "I’m trying to maintain that 190 area and see how that works this year."


Can Hyatt finally live up to the potential the Giants saw in him two years ago? The answer will unfold as the season progresses.
