St Mirren secured top spot in Premier Sports Cup Group D and a place in the last 16 after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ayr United.  

Two goals from Killian Phillips, set up by "maverick" Roland Idowu, proved decisive for the Buddies at Somerset Park. Manager Stephen Robinson praised both players following the victory.

"Roland, we played him just off [striker] Mikael [Mandron] and told him to float into those wider areas where the goal came from because it's very congested in the middle of the pitch," Robinson explained to BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound. "He was excellent. He was involved in both goals. He's a maverick, he's someone who can change the game for us and he's someone we're trying to bring into the game."

Robinson also highlighted Phillips' contributions after his permanent transfer from Crystal Palace. 

"We have worked constantly on cutting balls back and making runs and Killian is getting his just rewards and he's adding goals to the other good attributes he's got," Robinson stated.

Ayr United pulled a goal back in the second half, but St Mirren held firm to secure the victory. Despite some complacency in the second period, Robinson acknowledged the positive aspects of his team's performance.

"The way we played in the first half, I thought we were outstanding," he said. "We got a little bit casual in the second half and didn't do the simple things well. We lose a goal from a set-play and the momentum swings and puts us on the back foot, but we showed the character and quality and we should have gone and finished the game off with three or four more goals."

Rashawn Slater, the Los Angeles Chargers' standout offensive tackle, has signed a blockbuster four-year, $114 million contract extension. This deal makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history by average annual value at $28.5 million per year. 

The news comes after the Chargers held off on extending Slater since last offseason, despite other top tackles from the 2021 draft class securing lucrative deals.  Detroit Lions' Penei Sewell signed a four-year, $112 million contract with $85 million guaranteed, and Minnesota Vikings' Christian Darrisaw inked a four-year, $104 million deal with $67 million guaranteed.


**Dominant Performance Propels Slater to Record Deal**

Slater, the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has started all 52 of his career appearances at left tackle, protecting Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert's blind side. In 2024, he started 16 games, including playoff contests, contributing to the team’s franchise-record low eight turnovers, which tied for the second-fewest in a single season in NFL history.

Slater's exceptional performance earned him numerous accolades. As a rookie in 2021, he started all 16 games at left tackle and was named second-team All-Pro by The Associated Press. He also became the first rookie tackle to be named an all-star since 2012, selected as the starting left tackle for the AFC in the Pro Bowl.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia Eagles tackles Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson remain among the league’s highest-paid at their position despite recent developments.  Johnson is currently the 7th highest-paid offensive tackle in the NFL, while Mailata sits at No. 8 following Slater's record deal. 


Mailata boasts a stellar PFF grade, leading all offensive tackles in Week 17 with an 85.5 overall grade and ranking as the highest-graded offensive tackle in the NFL (95.8) according to PFF. He leads the league in run blocking grade (94.9) and is second in pass blocking (91.7).


Johnson, ranked first among NFL right tackles in PFF pass-blocking grade (88.1), pressure percentage (2.2%), and knockdown percentage (0.2%) last season, allowed zero sacks and one quarterback hit in 451 pass-blocking snaps.

Jaxson Dart, the New York Giants' rookie quarterback, turned heads Sunday with his most impressive performance of training camp.  Reports from the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford described Dart as having his "best practice of training camp" to date.

With Monday bringing the Giants' first padded practice, all eyes will be on Dart as he seeks to continue his impressive run in training camp's second week.

"If he feels like he’s fully fit and available for us, I think it would be a great deal for us," Gill told Test Match Special. "If he's not playing, I still think we have the right kind of bowling attack."

Bumrah, ranked as the world's leading bowler, has already taken 14 wickets in the series – more than any other Indian bowler. However, his performance in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford was less potent, with figures of 2-112 from 33 overs. Former England captain Alastair Cook believes India are right to keep their cards close to their chest regarding Bumrah's availability for the fifth Test. 

"Even if he isn't going to play, you wouldn't tell people now, just on a purely tactical basis," Cook told Test Match Special. "They made a mistake at the beginning of the series saying he could only play three, because you get thrown into a situation like now where the series is still on the line.

"If he's not fit to play, not playing is the right decision."

Good news for India comes in the form of seamer Akash Deep's return after missing the fourth Test due to a groin injury. However, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will miss the final Test following a broken foot sustained during the Manchester clash. Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper Narayan Jagadeesan has been called up as cover.

Pant’s remarkable resilience, batting with a broken foot and reaching 54 runs, was lauded by India coach Gautam Gambhir. “Any amount of praise is not enough for him, batting with a broken foot,” he said. “Generations to come should talk about this, someone who batted with a broken foot."

Gambhir also expressed his support for the introduction of injury replacements in Test cricket.

Al-Nassr have struck a deal worth up to £43.7 million to acquire Chelsea forward Joao Felix. The 25-year-old has received the green light to travel to Riyadh for his medical, paving the way for his official transfer.  Felix will reunite with fellow Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo at the Saudi Pro League club after seeing off competition from his former side, Benfica.

This move allows Chelsea to recoup the £45 million they invested in Felix last summer from Atletico Madrid. The Blues had previously loaned him out to AC Milan for six months in January for a £5 million fee.  

**Chelsea's Summer Business: Balancing the Books**

Amidst their recent Club World Cup triumph, Chelsea have been actively selling players this summer to achieve financial balance. Goalkeepers Djordje Petrovic and Kepa Arrizabalaga, along with winger Noni Madueke, have already departed the club. These sales have generated approximately £130 million for the Blues.

**Arsenal have completed a blockbuster deal, signing Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting for a fee that could reach £64 million.** 

The 27-year-old forward has been a goal machine in Portugal, scoring a phenomenal 97 goals in just 102 appearances for Sporting. His incredible form last season saw him rack up an astonishing 54 goals in 52 games, averaging more than a goal per game.

Gyokeres' impressive numbers have not gone unnoticed by top clubs, including Manchester United who sparked debate over his Premier League potential. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand expressed doubts about Gyokeres' ability to thrive in the English top flight, questioning whether he possessed the skills needed to succeed against elite defenses. 

"Is there enough - after he's physically matched - to get him a goal?" Ferdinand queried on his podcast.

However, Bjorn Hamberg, Gyokeres' former assistant coach at Brighton and fellow Swede, insists that the striker possesses the physical attributes necessary for success in England: "He has got the physicality for sure."

 **From Championship Loans to Champions League Goals**

Gyokeres' journey to Arsenal is a testament to his talent and determination. After leaving Brighton without playing a single Premier League minute, he rebuilt his career through loan spells in the Championship with Swansea and Coventry, and in Germany with St Pauli. 

His form at Coventry caught the eye of Sporting, who signed him for £20.5m.  In Portugal, Gyokeres has flourished, scoring 39 goals in the Primeira Liga during the 2024-25 season, surpassing any other player who reached 20 goals. He also impressed in the Champions League with a hat-trick against Manchester City and six goals overall.

**Can He Match Ronaldo's Legacy?**


While Cristiano Ronaldo stands as the most successful import from Portugal to England,  the question remains: Can Gyokeres follow in his footsteps and become a Premier League legend?

The history of Portuguese forwards moving to England is mixed. Some have thrived, like Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) who has scored 62 goals in the Premier League. Others, like Mario Jardel, have fallen short of expectations.  


Gyokeres' unique goal celebration, inspired by Bane from Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, captures his fierce determination to succeed.

His former coaches and teammates describe him as a "stubborn kid" with a "strong mentality" who is always focused on achieving his goals.
