## Japanese Star Miyu Yamashita Crowns Historic LPGA Season with AIG Women's British Open Victory

**Rookie Claims Title in Dramatic Fashion, Cementing Japan's Golden Era on the Green**

Miyu Yamashita, a rising star from Japan, etched her name into golfing history by capturing the 2025 AIG Women’s British Open. The victory marked not only her first major championship but also solidified Japan's dominance in women's golf this season.  


Yamashita, who turned 24 just yesterday, delivered a commanding performance at Royal Porthcawl, closing with a 2-under 70 to finish at 11 under par. This two-stroke lead over English sensation Charley Hull and compatriot Minami Katsu cemented her position as the LPGA's 21st different winner in a season already marked by remarkable diversity.

“To win such an historic tournament in front of all these amazing fans is such an incredible feeling,” Yamashita said, through an interpreter.


This triumph further highlights Japan’s golden era in women's golf.  Yamashita joins fellow Japanese golfers Mao Saigo (Chevron Championship) and four other Japanese winners this season, showcasing the nation's prowess on the global stage.

The victory wasn't without its challenges. Yamashita faced a difficult Saturday round, struggling with her putting and battling to maintain her lead. However, she rebounded in style on Sunday, showcasing her signature composure and scrambling skills to secure a well-deserved victory.


Her triumph comes amidst a season of unprecedented change in women's golf, contrasting sharply with 2024 when Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko dominated the tour.  Yamashita’s victory marks a new era, emphasizing diversity and exciting young talent.

While Yamashita celebrated her historic win, fellow English golfer Lottie Woad delivered another impressive performance, finishing tied for eighth in her second professional start. Her captivating debut at Porthcawl saw her become an instant fan favorite.


“Just walking out from the first tee, I got a loud cheer,” said Woad. “And I could tell everyone was rooting for me. That was nice.” 

The AIG Women's British Open concluded with record-breaking crowds and a captivating final round.  Paula Martin Sampedro, a rising star from Stanford University, stole the show with an incredible back-nine 30, showcasing her exceptional talent.

## Back Injury Forces Van Rooyen Out of Wyndham Championship

**Weather Suspension Follows Withdrawal Announcement**

A back injury has sidelined South African golfer Erik van Rooyen at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, just hours after play was suspended due to dangerous weather. The PGA Tour announced van Rooyen's withdrawal Friday afternoon during his second round. He was 1 over through 14 holes and 4 over for the tournament, well below the projected cut line of 4 under.

This marks another withdrawal from the final event of the 2025 regular season on the PGA Tour. Four other golfers had already withdrawn since Sunday. Van Rooyen's departure was announced just 10 minutes after officials halted play due to unfavorable conditions.


**FedEx Cup Hopes Dented**

At the time of his withdrawal, van Rooyen sat at 68th in the projected FedEx Cup Playoffs standings, four spots lower than his starting position. Only the top 70 players advance to next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, marking the first event of the postseason.

**Three-Shot Victory Secures Irishman's Spot Among Elite**

Padraig Harrington continues his dominant run in the senior ranks, claiming victory at the 2025 ISPS Handa Senior Open at Sunningdale.  He closed out the championship with a stellar 3-under 67 on Sunday, finishing a commanding three shots ahead of the field at 16 under par. This marks Harrington's second consecutive senior major title, following his one-shot victory at the 2025 U.S. Senior Open in Colorado Springs last month.


**"Thrilled and Euphoric":  Harrington Reacts to Historic Win**

For the 53-year-old Irishman, this victory carries extra weight. Harrington, a two-time Open Championship winner (2007 & 2008), had previously finished second in the British Senior Open twice.


"You know, right now I'm just thrilled to have won the tournament and gone out there and played well," Harrington said. "I think, yeah, that will seep in.  I know you were talking about how I won The Open, to win the Senior Open, there's only five players, so you want to be in that category. I think they are the sort of things that you realize over the next couple of days, the significance of it."

"Right now I'm thrilled, euphoric, that I've gotten it done," he added.


**Dramatic Back Nine Sees Harrington Hold Off Challengers**

Harrington’s victory wasn't without drama. He began the final round with an eagle on the first hole, extending his lead to three over Justin Leonard. While a strong front nine suggested a runaway win, Thomas Bjorn mounted a late charge with three birdies in four holes between Nos. 11-14. However, Harrington responded with a birdie of his own on No. 14 and Bjorn's hopes were dashed by a bogey on No. 16.

Despite missing out on the victory, Bjorn posted a commendable second-place finish at 13 under par. This marks his second runner-up result in the 2025 senior major season.  Leonard also finished at 13 under, securing his third top-10 finish of the year.


**Harrington Collects Top Prize**

Harrington's impressive performance earned him $447,800 of the $2.85 million purse. The victory solidifies his place as a force to be reckoned with in the senior ranks and sets the stage for an exciting remainder of the 2025 season.

**Mary Liu, hailing from China, started her week with a 76 but bounced back to finish solo fifth, birdieing the 18th on Sunday.**  For the second-year LPGA player, qualifying for the British Open feels like "a dream come true."
