Sherrone Moore pinpoints Michigan players standing out in fall camp, including some true freshmen
Wolverines' Young Guns Making Waves in Fall Camp
Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore is buzzing about the unexpected contributions coming from his team's younger players during fall camp.
Linebackers Stepping Up
While veterans Ernie Hausmann, Jaishawn Barham, and Jimmy Rolder anchor the linebacker position, sophomore Cole Sullivan has been catching Moore's eye. "He’s very multiple, doing different things," said Moore of Sullivan. “Cole, really, is a guy that’s jumped out.”
Moore even compared Sullivan to a rising star at Big Ten Media Days, predicting he could "take the college football world by storm." Freshman Chase Taylor is also pushing for playing time in the linebacker room.
Defensive Backfield Depth Grows
Senior Jaden Mangham, who missed most of last season due to injury after transferring from Michigan State, has returned with a vengeance. Notching four interceptions in 2023, Mangham was named honorable mention All-Big Ten.
Sophomore cornerback Jo’Ziah Edmond is turning heads with two pick-sixes during fall camp, while freshman Shamari Earls is another player to watch.
Offensive Line Finding Its Footing
Michigan's offensive line, a weakness last season, has shown marked improvement. "They’ve become closer this offseason, and they’ve worked really, really hard," said Moore. "And they’re pushing that D-line now."
The coaches are particularly excited about the development of freshman tackles Andrew Babalola and Ty Haywood and guard Avery Gach, who could all see significant playing time.
Receivers a Bright Spot
Moore raves about his wide receivers: “Receivers — really electric group.” He credited Coach Ron Bellamy and assistant Erik "Soup" Campbell for their work with the talented group.
Fresh Faces Making Noise
When asked about standout freshmen, Moore highlighted several names:
- Nate Marshall: The defensive end enrolled in summer and possesses "freakish pass-rush ability."
- Chase Taylor: Continues to climb in the linebacker room.
- Shamari Earls: Flashing potential at cornerback.
- Jayden Sanders: Another standout cornerback with high upside.
Bryce Underwood, the highly touted quarterback who's expected to battle for the starting position, is an obvious choice for a freshman making waves.
Jamar Browder and Andrew Marsh, two early enrollees, are poised to contribute on offense as well.
