Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses set for historic final clash against Nigeria in WAFCON 2025
Morocco's Lionesses Roar for History Against Super Falcons
Rabat to Host Epic WAFCON Final as Moroccan Team Seeks Maiden Title
Morocco’s women’s national football team, the Atlas Lionesses, are set to battle nine-time champions Nigeria, the Super Falcons, in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final today at Rabat's Olympic Stadium. This high-stakes clash promises a captivating display of skill and determination as both teams aim for continental glory.
The Lionesses are chasing their first-ever WAFCON title, having finished runners-up on home soil in the 2022 tournament after a narrow 2-1 loss to South Africa. This marks their second appearance in the final, fueling hopes of rewriting Moroccan football history.
Revenge is on Nigeria's agenda. Seeking a record-extending tenth title, they aim to overcome their 2022 semi-final defeat to Morocco (5-4 on penalties) and cement their dominance. Coach Justin Madugu’s squad topped their group with seven points, defeating Zambia 5-0 in the quarterfinals before edging past South Africa 2-1 in the semis.
Led by Spanish coach Jorge Vilda, who guided Spain to a Women's World Cup title, the Moroccan side arrives at the final undefeated. Their journey includes topping Group A with seven points (a draw against Zambia (2-2), wins over DR Congo (4-2) and Senegal (1-0)), followed by quarterfinal victory over Mali (3-1) and a dramatic semifinal win against Ghana (4-2 on penalties).
Vilda acknowledges the team's evolution since the 2022 tournament, calling their previous final appearance “a major breakthrough” that serves as a foundation for this year’s campaign. The Moroccan team’s recent trajectory, including a historic FIFA Women's World Cup appearance, solidifies their status as a rising continental force.
