Israel's Gaza plan risks 'another calamity': UN official
Gaza Control Plan Sparks UN Fears of "Another Calamity"
Israel insists it won't occupy territory as emergency Security Council meeting convened.
A top UN official warned the Security Council on Sunday that Israel’s plan to control Gaza City risks “another calamity” with global repercussions. The unusual weekend meeting was called after Israel announced its military would “take control” of Gaza.
“This could lead to another calamity,” said the UN official, speaking anonymously to the Security Council.
Despite the UN's warnings, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that his goal is not to occupy Gaza. "We will act responsibly and humanely," Netanyahu stated.
