Indiana Pacers Hoping to Avoid 'Crazy' Situation This Year
Can Pacers Escape 'Crazy' Season Repeat?
Healthy Big Men Fuel Optimism for Indy Despite Key Departures
It's easy to forget the early struggles of last season. After an improbable run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2024, culminating in a heartbreaking seven-game loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Finals, the Indiana Pacers seemed poised for another deep playoff run. But injuries, particularly Tyrese Haliburton's torn ACL, derailed their championship aspirations.
Months earlier, the team was mired in a 10-15 slump, losing crucial depth pieces James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson to Achilles injuries within days of each other. The “crazy” season seemed set for another downturn as they faced a daunting task without Haliburton and Myles Turner heading into next year.
But Indiana’s impressive showing last season proved they shouldn't be underestimated.
With Jackson and Wiseman both healthy again, and the addition of Jay Huff to bolster their frontcourt depth, the Pacers are surprisingly well-positioned. "We’re thrilled to bring back Isaiah and James," an unnamed coach told Spotrac. "I mean, who the heck has two big guys tear Achilles’ in the span of a week? That was crazy. Those guys were poised to have good years for us last year. Now, they’re set up to do the same this year. And adding Jay Huff was big-time. He’s an underrated floor spacer and rim protector. No one can replace Myles, but Jay is going to be a lot better than a lot of people realize.”
Andrew Nembhard provides a reliable presence at point guard, while promising depth players are ready to contribute.
Even with the loss of star power, the Pacers could surprise as a dark-horse playoff contender or at least play-in tournament participant. If Haliburton returns ahead of schedule, following a similar path as Jayson Tatum's comeback, Indiana's chances become even more formidable.
