Falmouth Road Race Prepares for Thousands of Runners
The 53rd annual ASICS Falmouth Road Race is set to take place Sunday. Last year's competition saw Kenyan runner John Korir triumph in the men's division with a time of 31:15, followed closely by Athanas Kioko (32:06) and Mohamed Reda El Aaraby (32:06). Fentaye Belayneh Azale took the women's title in 36:10, with Melknat Wudu Sharew finishing second (36:11) and Emma Bates third (36:17).
Race Day Logistics:
The Wheelchair Division kicks off proceedings at 8:40 a.m., followed by the Wheelchair Duos at 8:41 a.m. Elite Women take to the course at 8:50 a.m., with the Elite Men starting at 9:00 a.m. Sub-elite runners begin at 9:02 a.m., and the General Field follows at 9:04 a.m.
With an anticipated 20,000 participants, parking will be highly competitive. Avoid parking on private property or near businesses to minimize towing risks. Consider utilizing designated parking areas such as Mullen-Hall and Morse Pond schools, Town Hall, the public lot near the library, and the Homeport office complex on Gifford Street. Allow ample travel time due to heavy traffic throughout the weekend. Notably, Worcester Court will be off-limits for parking.
A drop-off only busing option is available at Falmouth High School (874 Gifford Street) from 6:00 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. Eligibility requires RSVP confirmation. Access to Woods Hole, the race start area, will be strictly controlled by public safety officials, with no parking or boat drop-offs permitted except for authorized vehicles. A free bus departing from Lawrence School (113 Lakeview Ave) at 6:00 a.m. provides transportation to the starting line. Arrive before 7:20 a.m. to ensure a seat; those arriving later may not be guaranteed transport.
Pre-Race Festivities:
The Health and Fitness Expo, situated at the Falmouth High School Field House (874 Gifford St.), welcomes participants, spectators, and enthusiasts for a three-day celebration. The expo features the latest in running and fitness gear, official race apparel, athletic footwear, autographed posters by renowned athletes, seminars, the ASICS Falmouth Road Race course video, and even an opportunity to receive runner gift bags from elite athletes or local celebrities.
The Expo is open:
- Thursday: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Friday: Noon to 7:00 p.m.
- Saturday: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
On Friday at 7:00 p.m., the Falmouth Track Festival takes place at the Falmouth High School James Kalperis Track, featuring the Tommy Cochary High School Mile, Elite Wheelchair Mile, and Elite Mile. Opening ceremonies commence at 6:00 p.m. Local food trucks will offer a variety of snacks throughout the event.
Saturday hosts the 23rd annual SBLI Family Fun Run, a free event starting at 9:00 a.m.
Medical Considerations:
With hot summer temperatures, medical assistance will be readily available along the course. Medical stations will be located at the start in Woods Hole, three strategic points throughout the race route, and at both the finish line and the Finish Line Medical Tent. A Mobile Medical Team will operate between each station. All medical volunteers will wear royal blue shirts and display medical credentials for easy identification.
